There are many emergent moves that occur when attempting tight maneuvers, especially toward the end of the game. Unfortunately, they aren't consistent, and activating them seems to happen rather by accident during the course of normal play. This can cause a choregraphed set of inputs to go awry and result in undue failure. This causes the challenge to get rather cozy with being obnoxious, because clearly there wants to be a higher level of gameplay here, as is fitting it's obvious MetroidVania roots. Here's a short list of "moves" I encountered:

1: Diagonal charge. It's possible to charge and jump in a particular direction, but the keystrokes have to be executed in VERY close succession, but not simultaneously.

2: Chain Charge. This one is a bit more "human accessible" but it seems to activate at the most annoying times, especially when you want to do other jumps. It has saved my butt on occasion. I was attempting to use it to clear the second S spike room after the 3 red slimes you have to charge through, but no success as of yet because the timings are so tight in there. Basically you can charge, then dive, then charge again if you are quick enough (and also Dive again, but space for this is hard to come by; I usually run into the floor or walls first)

3: Dive Cancel. this one seems to work where if you jump at the exact moment you grab a ledge you are charging into, the jump is ignored and instead the game thinks you are still in the air, so when you press jump again to get off the ledge it activates a dive so you throw yourself at the floor instead of climbing the ledge. Changing the controls so pushing up climbs a ledge that you can stand on instead of jump would solve this, and can also be mutually exclusive, because I can see scenarios where leaving it as is could lead to some interesting puzzle elements.

I did beat the game shortly after this review. So it's not impossible. Extra 1/2 star.

Controls are clearly geared toward Gamepads and not even openly at that. Keyboard controlls are wonky as the A/S keys SHOULD REALLY BE REVERSED. Kept attacking when I meant to jump, didn't know that I COULD jump until the middle of the third area, and one of your basic slide moves was damn near impossible to pull off IN THE TUTORIAL THAT TEACHES IT.

God man, this used to be a great game series WTF. It's playable, but barely. The Satisfying "just running with minimal input an look cool" aspect is completely GONE. I was fighting just to stay on anything that resembled a path, and your bonus areas are not only easy to miss, but there is LITERALLY no way to go back to get them if you missed them, AND if you gave out power ups in them as is seems you did, it seems that you needed the powerup from the previous ones to be successful in subsequent ones. WOW. Big OOF on game design there. Finally, in the first game you could go back to start and try for stuff you missed after almost each area, not here.

Sure, you can claim that it adds to "replayablity," but why would I subject my self to that again EXCEPT to get the stuff I missed. Fun? I was not having it.

3/5 does not live up to the legacy, shame.

it functions.

No to bad. Don't get how everyone is having problems. Perhaps people have forgotten how point and click games work? Knocked this out in 5 minutes. The only "issue" i had was finding the void shard, but after that i was on my way.

My biggest gripe about this game is the lack of health drops. While I get that while each heart is precious, there are some sections that get AWFUL softlock-y if you aren't PERFECT in your platforming, ESPECIALLY while backtracking. (I kept getting map drops, Dying, going a different way, then circumventing the area the map was showing, leading to the frustrating malady where-in I had probably explored everywhere, but had no map progress to show for it, so I couldn't be sure.) Also, After the first boss, I encountered a glitch where I ended up in the last area, and this glitch persisted over several lives before it corrected itself.

gamesbynoe responds:

In fact, main character has up to 4 lives. Just need to find them. And the map itself will tell you in which direction you should explore the dungeon. Thank you.

For those confused, this is a bit like reverse minesweeper. each box represents the number of boxes that need to be fillet in the surrounding 8 squares

Most CONSOLE controllers you mean. (because fuck us 3rd party controller users, right?) Don't make claims about controller support unless you mean them.

MOST MEANS MOST.

I'm halving your score because of this because while it does feature Keyboard controls, I couldn't massage out a comfortable setup with all the actions you have on hand. THIS IS A DAMN SHAME. Re upload with USB controller detection at the very least so I'm not left out in the cold. This game DEMANDS controller support and your team is assuming every one is using XBONE, Switch or PS4 pads.

(I mean really, I couldn't even map a key bind to M1. WTF Man, W? T? F? this is basic level shit, this game should be better than this.)

squidly responds:

What controller are you using?

I heard in one of the reviews that the birds were something that if freed would help out. They just flew off. After the last one I think I figured it out, but i'm not sure...Are you supposed to go flat and get in their mouths? Cause you could have been a tad more obvious about that point. I'll have to see if they migrate back to their start points, and try again...

Butzbo responds:

Melting into their mouths would've been a fun interaction, but don't bother with that ;)
You should be able to find their gathering point...

GBC Worthy! level 29 is evil. Beat it though and only took about 45 minutes. Remake this in your own time and develop the idea! Could use a level editor, and jumps can be flighty sometimes, but still a solid game! 5/5!

AdventureIslands responds:

I actually am working on a polished remake for mobiles with more levels and better controls and art.

I find it amusing that the final thing I achieved, and thus my personal pinnacle of creation was Beer.
